More than 400 coaches have applied for the vacant Black Stars head coach position, according to former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara.
Ghana are searching for a new head coach following the departure of Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz after the national team suffered consecutive defeats in their opening two matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving Ghana bottom of Group C without a point.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Sannie Daara, who currently works as a senior media officer at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), disclosed the number of applicants seeking to take charge of the four-time African champions.
“More than 400 coaches have applied for the Black Stars job,” he said.
He suggested that the large number of applications reflected the respect Ghana commands in international football and the appeal of coaching the national team.
“Most of the coaches are looking for jobs, and most of them respect Ghana due to how we play. I can confirm that over 400 coaches have applied for the job,” he added.
A five-member committee established by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is responsible for identifying and recommending a suitable candidate to replace Queiroz. The committee’s report is expected to be submitted on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the GFA has confirmed that an interim technical team will oversee Ghana’s next two AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia in November as the search for a permanent head coach continues.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in back-to-back fixtures on Matchdays Three and Four, with both matches set to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The upcoming double-header presents Ghana with an opportunity to revive their qualifying campaign after a disappointing start. However, the team will need to improve significantly to strengthen their chances of reaching the tournament.
Ghana are also seeking a return to the continental showpiece after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
With more than 400 coaches reportedly expressing interest in the vacant position, attention will now turn to the committee’s recommendations and the GFA’s eventual decision on who will lead the Black Stars in their next phase.
