Asante Kotoko have reportedly opened discussions with former midfielder Richmond Lamptey over a possible return to the club, although negotiations remain at an early stage.
The 29-year-old is currently a free agent and has attracted interest from a number of Ghana Premier League clubs as well as teams abroad, with Kotoko among the clubs exploring a move for the experienced midfielder.
Lamptey is no stranger to life at the Baba Yara Stadium, having joined the Porcupine Warriors from Inter Allies in September 2021 on a three-year contract. He quickly established himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders and played a key role in Kotoko’s 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title-winning campaign under Prosper Narteh Ogum.
During his three-year spell with the Kumasi giants, Lamptey became a regular starter, helping Kotoko compete domestically and in the CAF Champions League before leaving the club by mutual consent in June 2024 after making a significant contribution in midfield.
After departing Asante Kotoko in June 2024, Lamptey joined Rwandan giants APR FC on a two-year deal. He enjoyed immediate success, helping the club win the Rwanda Premier League, the Peace Cup and the Heroes Cup during the 2024/25 season.
In September 2025, the Ghanaian midfielder secured a permanent move to Libyan side Al-Ittihad Misurata, continuing his career in North Africa.
Lamptey is now available as a free agent following the end of his spell abroad, paving the way for a potential return to the Ghana Premier League.
Kotoko are believed to be keen on adding experience and leadership to their midfield as they continue to reshape the squad ahead of the second half of the season. However, no agreement has yet been reached, with talks between both parties still ongoing.
Should the move materialise, Lamptey would return to a club where he enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career, rekindling a relationship that delivered a Ghana Premier League title and established him as one of the league’s standout midfielders.
