Black Stars defender Marvin Senaya has made his long-awaited return to competitive football after spending more than four months on the sidelines with the hamstring injury he sustained during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old featured for AJ Auxerre in their Ligue 1 clash against Strasbourg, marking his first appearance of the 2026/27 season as he continues his journey back to full match fitness. Senaya came off the bench in the second half, making his first competitive outing since July.
Senaya’s injury occurred during Ghana’s Round of 32 encounter against Colombia at the FIFA World Cup, where he was forced off just 13 minutes into the match after suffering a serious hamstring problem. An MRI scan confirmed the extent of the injury, prompting the defender to undergo successful surgery in Paris before beginning an extensive rehabilitation programme with Auxerre.
The setback ruled him out of the opening seven matches of Auxerre’s Ligue 1 campaign and delayed his return beyond the initial recovery timeline. After weeks of rehabilitation, including a gradual return to running and full team training, Senaya has now completed his comeback to competitive action.
His return comes as a timely boost for both Auxerre and the Black Stars, with the Ghana international expected to build up his fitness in the coming weeks ahead of the country’s upcoming international assignments.
