Asante Kotoko assistant coach Mohammed Hamza Obeng believes his side’s tactical adjustments after the break were key to their improved performance in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The Porcupine Warriors struggled to impose themselves during the opening half but returned a much-improved side after the interval, creating several opportunities that could have secured all three points.
Reflecting on the match, Obeng said Kotoko took control in the second half despite shortcomings in their overall build-up play.
“Looking at the second half, we controlled the game. Our build-up wasn’t the best, but we created chances and could have scored more,” he said.
The assistant coach attributed the improved display to changes in midfield, revealing that a lack of movement before halftime prompted the technical team to introduce fresh legs after the restart.
“Our midfielders were static in the first half and there wasn’t enough movement. We corrected that in the second half by bringing in fresh legs, and that made the magic,” he explained.
Obeng also admitted that Kotoko’s attacking unit has not been clinical enough in front of goal but expressed confidence that the goals will come as long as the team remains committed to its tactical identity.
“We’re not happy that our strikers aren’t scoring, but it’s all about maintaining our structure and sticking to our game plan. We are 100 per cent confident we can fight for the title—we just need our supporters behind us,” he added.
The draw leaves Kotoko with work to do in the Ghana Premier League title race, but Obeng remains optimistic that the Porcupine Warriors have the quality to challenge for the championship if they continue to improve their performances and convert their chances in the final third.
