Ghana female Star Laadi Issaka making Great things happen in the athletic department at Mississippi Valley State University. For the second consecutive year, Laadi Issaka finished first in multiple categories in the nation. This marks the first time in Devilettes soccer history an athlete has recorded back-to-back number one finishes (nationally).
Issaka is the 2016-17 NCAA Division I statistical champion for Points Per Game and Goals Per Game. During the 2015-16 season she was the NCAA Division I women’s soccer statistical champion for Assists Per Game.
Issaka detailed, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my family, coaches, teammates and Almighty God for all their support, guidance which has made it possible for me to be honored with these top awards; without them I wouldn’t have reached this achievement. I would also like to express my gratitude to these two special people in my life, Mariana Balboa, and Camila Gomide for their continued support. Their support isn’t limited to the field; it extends beyond the boundaries of the field.”
Head Coach Sean Mapson said, “This an amazing achievement for Laadi because she is an extraordinary student-athlete, who strives to achieve great things both on and off the field. Laadi possesses the ability to influence those around her in a positive manner and is a joy to work with. I see no reason she won’t continue to improve and develop as a player.”
“When Athletic Director Dianthia Ford-Kee told me that about the awards, I literally didn’t have the words to express my feelings. Now that I’ve had time to process it, I can say it feels amazing. It also proves that hard work is not in vain and you must always continue to work hard, while striving for more,” said Issaka.
She (Issaka) isn’t short on motivation pushing her drive to success. When she steps on the field there is only one thing on her mind, winning the contest for her school, team, teammates and her coaches. Issaka’s largest form of motivation is remembering where she is and the reason she is here. She reminds herself that she left her family to travel to a faraway country, to pursue her dreams.
In short, Issaka claims these honors for her family, teammates, friends, guardians and teachers, for they all serve as a source of motivation in her drive for triumph on the field and in life.
