Jerome Opoku has described his first competitive start for the Black Stars as a long-awaited dream fulfilled after playing a key role in Ghana’s dominant 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Istanbul Basaksehir center-back, who had previously featured in friendlies, was handed his first official start following a brief appearance against Chad. Speaking to Flashscore, Opoku expressed his excitement over the milestone.
“I’ve been really working hard and looking forward to getting a chance in the national team, and I knew such a day would come for me to help the team,” he said. “For me, it’s always been a dream and a privilege to wear the national colors and defend the nation.”
Slotting seamlessly into Otto Addo’s three-man defense, a system he is accustomed to at club level, the 26-year-old delivered a solid performance at the back.
With Ghana leading Group I, Opoku remains fully committed to securing World Cup qualification. “We know it’s not done yet, so we stay focused and make sure we get the job done,” he affirmed.
