Ghanaian forward Abdul-Aziz Yakubu was twice on target for Rio Ave who beat SC Farense on Tuesday night in the Portuguese League Cup.
Aziz was back on the pitch for the first time since the 1-0 win over Arouca in the Primeira Liga last month before the break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The forward was named in the starting line-up and opened the scoring after just 30 minutes to give Rio Ave the lead at home.
The away team pegged back after recess with Zach Muscat netting the equaliser but Aziz proved his worth was again as he scored again from the spot to restore his side’s lead.
The Ghanaian was later subbed off in the 76th minute of the encounter as Bruni Ventura took his place.
The win sees Rio Ave go second on the table in the League Cup, three points behind Sporting Cp who also recorded a thumping win over CS Maritimo.
