As of 1982, Ghana stood tall as Africa’s most successful football nation. The Black Stars had already won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, leading the continent. Nigeria had just one title, while Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire were yet to lift the famous trophy.
Fast forward to 2026, and the AFCON landscape has changed significantly.
Ghana remains on four titles, with no additions since their last triumph in 1982. While the Black Stars continue to be a respected force, their trophy count has stayed the same over the decades.
Nigeria have made strong progress, increasing their titles from one to three. The Super Eagles have grown into one of Africa’s most consistent teams, regularly competing at the highest level.
Cameroon have recorded the biggest rise. From zero titles in 1982, the Indomitable Lions now boast five AFCON trophies, making them the most successful nation on the continent as of 2026.
Côte d’Ivoire have also enjoyed success. After having no titles in 1982, the Elephants now have three AFCON crowns, underlining their growth into a major African football powerhouse.
The figures clearly show how African football has evolved over the years, with new giants rising while former leaders fight to reclaim past glory.
