Charlton Athletic Academy star Daniel Kanu has signed his first professional deal with the club, committing his future to the Addicks until at least 2024.

The 17-year-old prolific striker, who has been with the club from U11 level, has enjoyed a hugely impressive season as a first-year scholar, scoring 31 goals before the end of January in all competitions for the U17s, U18s and U23s.

The Sierra Leonean youngster joins fellow U18 prospects Deji Elerewe, Karoy Anderson and Tyreece Campbell in penning pro contracts with the Addicks this term.

“We’re delighted that Daniel has committed his immediate future to us,” explained Academy Manager, Steve Avory.

“He fully deserves it and we’ve got the chance now to continue working with him and developing him. He’s a very well-rounded young man who recognises he still has a lot to learn and develop, but he’ll do that, for sure.

“We’re just delighted that Daniel and his family, who have supported him for such a long time in his Charlton journey, have decided that this is the place that they want to continue.

“What Daniel has is natural pace. He is exceptionally quick and has always had an eye for goal and has been clinical in his finishing. That’s got even better this season with the opportunity that he’s had in full-time football.”

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Kanu said: “It’s a great feeling. It’s hard to explain how I feel right now, it’s a massive, massive moment for me and my family. I’m just really happy I’m able to commit my future to this club.

“I’ve enjoyed this season so much. 31 goals before the end of January isn’t something you hear all the time and I’m really proud of myself for doing this well for this season. After signing the professional contract, I just want to continue doing well and helping the team win every week.

“I always just want to score goals and keep trying – even if I miss a chance, I have the belief that I’ll get another chance that I’ll score from. That’s what keeps me going until the last minute. It’s the ruthlessness that I have inside myself.”

He added: “I joined as an U11 and have a lot of great memories at this club and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to stay and commit my future. I have so many fond memories and I want to create more for Charlton and that’s why I want to stay and do my best for this club.”

Owner, Thomas Sandgaard, said: “Daniel is an excellent talent who is very highly rated by our academy staff. His goalscoring record this season is nothing short of remarkable. We have an amazing academy with a track record of developing players, so Daniel is in very good hands. I’m looking forward to watching his progress.”
