SWINDON Town have signed free-agent English-born Nigerian defender Mandela Chinweizu Egbo on a contract until the end of the season.
The right-back has been training with Town’s first team since early January with a view to moving abroad while keeping himself fit.
But given Swindon’s injury problems, head coach Ben Garner was quick to convince his former Crystal Palace academy scholar to sign at the County Ground for the final 11 games.
In a statement on Town’s website, director of football Ben Chorley said: “Manny has been training with us for some time now. He has a fantastic CV playing in Germany and in the MLS.
“His attitude has been spot on over the last few months. We welcome him into the squad for the run-in. He will bring big game experience and much-needed depth.”
A part of the England U17 team that won the 2014 UEFA European U17 Championship, the 24-year-old later went on to play for Borussia Monchengladbach II in the Regionalliga West across a four-year period.
Egbo then signed for New York Red Bulls in the MLS, where he made his debut against rivals New York City before netting for the first time against David Beckham-owned Inter Miami.
The attacking full-back went on to make 21 appearances for New York’s second team before returning to England for family reasons.
