Antoine Semenyo should replace Salah if he leaves, says Michael Owen

Michael Owen believes Antoine Semenyo is the ideal player to replace Mohamed Salah if the Liverpool forward decides to leave the club.

The former striker delivered a blunt assessment of the situation as speculation intensifies around Salah’s future.

Salah’s public frustration last weekend reignited debate within the club. The winger said he had been “thrown under the bus” after being benched for three straight matches under Arne Slot.

Their relationship has reportedly deteriorated, with Salah set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday. His return may come late in the January transfer window, raising the prospect of a mid-season exit.

Owen, speaking on Premier League Productions, argued that Liverpool should have a clear succession plan.

He praised Semenyo’s development at Bournemouth, noting that the forward has scored six league goals this season and continues to improve.

“He is a brilliant player,” Owen said. “He scores goals – and we don’t know if Mohamed Salah will stay or leave but, if he leaves, Semenyo should be his replacement.”

Salah’s omission from Liverpool’s Champions League win over Inter Milan on Tuesday highlighted the growing tension.

He remained in England while the team travelled to Milan, and he is unlikely to feature against Brighton unless significant progress is made in talks.

According to The Telegraph, Slot has hinted that Salah may review his recent comments and acknowledge that the heated interview could have been ill-judged.
