Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan praises Andre Ayew’s tenure as captain of the national team, highlighting his commendable leadership qualities despite mixed tournament results.
Ayew assumed the captaincy in 2019 under coach Kwesi Appiah, a decision met with skepticism by some media outlets, especially with Gyan still active on the team.
However, Gyan, who shared the dressing room with Ayew during his tenure, expresses admiration for Ayew’s leadership style and contributions to the Black Stars.
“Andre is a good leader. I have played with him and been with him at Black Stars camp,” he said on Asempa FM.
“With some of the things he does for the team, he has been good so far. “It is a different era but it has been good so far,” he added.
Under Ayew’s captaincy, the Black Stars reached the Round of 16 in the 2019 AFCON in Egypt and faced early exits in the group stages of subsequent AFCON editions in Cameroon (2021) and Ivory Coast (2023). Similarly, at the World Cup in Qatar, Ghana exited at the group stage.
Despite these challenges, Gyan acknowledges Ayew’s leadership as a vital asset to the team during a transitional period, emphasizing the importance of continuity and support for Ayew’s role as captain of the Black Stars.
