Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Samuel Sarfo Duku, has opened up about the club’s decision to part ways with head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, stating that the team’s poor performances continued despite management’s full support.
Ogum was dismissed following a disappointing run of results that saw the Porcupine Warriors surrender their position at the top of the Ghana Premier League with just six games remaining. The team has now dropped to fourth place and trails the league leaders by six points, sparking concerns among fans.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Duku emphasized that management had done their part in supporting the technical team but felt the expected improvement in performance was lacking.
“You will agree with me that we’re doing the best management in terms of providing the necessary support and motivation,” he said. “If we are not the best, we will be among the best two in the country, and you can attest to that.”
He further explained that responsibility for the team’s struggles lay with the technical staff, particularly given recent performances.
“Then, obviously, the blame will be put on the technical team. That is solely responsible for improving the performance of the team, which, unfortunately, is not happening,” Duku noted. “In the last couple of matches that we have played, things have gotten so bad.”
Kotoko have gone four league matches without a win, a run that ultimately led to Ogum’s exit. In the meantime, experienced coach Karim Zito has been appointed as interim head coach while the search for a permanent replacement continues.
Zito’s first test will come this Sunday when Kotoko face Aduana FC in match week 29 of the Ghana Premier League.
