Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare has been included in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Asare is the sole home-based player to earn a spot in coach Otto Addo’s 23-man squad, which was announced on Thursday at the Ghana Football Association headquarters.
Asare, who was part of the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic in June, has been selected despite a period of inactivity. His inclusion underscores his importance to the national team.
The squad features notable players such as Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Salisu, and Jordan Ayew. However, team captain Andre Ayew has been overlooked for the second time, as he remains a free agent.
The Black Stars will also be missing key players due to injuries, including Kamaldeen Sulemana, Salis Abdul Samed, Ernest Nuamah, and Gideon Mensah.
Ghana’s AFCON qualifying campaign kicks off against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Morocco on September 9. The qualifiers are crucial for securing a spot in the continent’s premier football tournament, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the AFCON.
