Asante Kotoko SC’s midfielder, Richmond Nii Lamptey, has clinched a spot in Ghana’s final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton announced the 27-man squad on Monday morning, confirming the inclusion of the 26-year-old central midfielder.
Lamptey initially made waves when he featured in the 55-man preliminary squad, earning recognition for his stellar performances in the Ghana Premier League. Football enthusiasts championed his inclusion, particularly highlighting his standout display in the Super Clash against Hearts of Oak, where Kotoko emerged victorious with a 3-2 win.
Throughout the current campaign, Lamptey’s influence has been pivotal for the Porcupine Warriors, contributing five assists in 12 appearances and playing a key role in the team’s six-match unbeaten streak.
Hughton, recognizing Lamptey’s consistent performance, opted for him over other alternatives in the central midfield position.
Ghana, placed in Group B, is set to face formidable opponents, including record-winners Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde during the group phase of the tournament, scheduled from Saturday, January 13, to Sunday, February 11, 2024.
