Afi Amenyeku, the captain of the Black Princesses, expressed her joy at leading the team to victory in the women’s football tournament at the 2023 African Games.
As a pivotal figure in the squad, Amenyeku played a crucial role in Ghana’s unbeaten run throughout the tournament, culminating in a thrilling extra-time triumph over Nigeria in the final at the Cape Coast Stadium.
Reflecting on the historic achievement, Amenyeku shared her excitement in an interview with Joy Sports, stating, “It’s a dream come true for me as the captain to lead the team to win gold. This is my first time captaining the team in a tournament, and I’m very happy to have won gold.”
Despite facing adversity when Nigeria took the lead in the first half, Amenyeku remained resilient, leading her team with determination and composure.
Tracy Twum’s timely equalizer paved the way for a tense finale, setting the stage for Mukarama Abdulai’s winning goal in extra time, which sealed the competition gold for the Black Princesses.
