Technical Advisor of the Black Stars, Winfried Schäfer, remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite missing out on a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the four-time African champions will return to action this month with crucial qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
In an interview with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) media team, Schäfer expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a place at the global tournament, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“I was a bit surprised President (Kurt Okraku) called me for a meeting. I met him in Manchester, it was a very good meeting. We have to go to the World Cup (in) 2026. When we work all together, I think it is possible,” the German tactician said.
Schäfer further emphasized the need for a strong mindset heading into the upcoming matches.
“We have to go into the next two matches with confidence and winner mentality,” he added.
Currently, Ghana sits second in Group I with nine points. The Black Stars will face Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.
