Ghana’s Black Stars endured one of the darkest nights in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying history after a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia ended a remarkable 51-year record.
The defeat at the Accra Sports Stadium marked the first time since April 1975 that Ghana had conceded three or more goals in an AFCON qualifier.
The previous occurrence came during the qualifiers for the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations, when the Black Stars suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Mali. For more than five decades, Ghana had avoided another heavy loss of that magnitude in AFCON qualifying until Tuesday’s dramatic setback.
The result also represents a new low under head coach Carlos Queiroz, whose side has now suffered consecutive defeats to open their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Having already lost 2-0 away to Côte d’Ivoire, the Black Stars were hoping to revive their qualification hopes against The Gambia but instead produced another disappointing display that leaves their campaign under serious pressure.
The four-goal concession raises fresh concerns about Ghana’s defensive frailties and leaves the four-time African champions with significant work to do if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alive.
For a nation with Ghana’s rich football history, the defeat will be remembered as one of the most disappointing AFCON qualifying results in recent decades, bringing an end to a defensive record that had stood for more than half a century.
