Breaking: Kwasi Appiah steps down as GFA EXCO member to focus on Sudan Vs Ghana games

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council Member, James Kwasi Appiah, is expected to temporarily step down from his role as head coach of Sudan’s Men’s National Football Team as Ghana prepares for crucial 2025 AFCON qualification matches against Sudan on October 10 and 14.

The decision, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), comes amid growing concerns over a “conflict of interest,” which breaches FIFA and CAF regulations. Appiah, who holds dual roles as a GFA Executive Council member and Sudan’s head coach, has been advised to temporarily vacate one of the positions to avoid any complications, particularly as both nations face off in these decisive qualifiers.

In an official letter addressed to the former Black Stars player and coach, CAF directed Appiah to step down as Sudan’s head coach until the two games are completed.

Sudan currently sits second in Group F with three points, while Ghana occupies third place with one point after a 1-0 loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger. The upcoming matches are critical for both teams as they vie for a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars will host Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, following CAF’s approval of the venue to accommodate the high-stakes encounter.
