AshantiGold SC, based in Obuasi, has obtained a court injunction to halt the commencement of the 2023/24 Ghana league season.
This action follows the suspension of the club by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) due to its association with banned officials Kwaku Frimpong and Emmanuel Frimpong, which violated GFA and FIFA statutes. The suspension came after the GFA’s Executive Council unanimously decided to impose it under Article 17(1) of the GFA Statutes.
Kwaku Frimpong and his son Emmanuel Frimpong received bans of 10 years and 8 years, respectively, from the GFA Disciplinary Committee for match manipulations, with these decisions upheld by the GFA Appeals Committee.
Despite the bans, AshantiGold SC maintained contact with the Frimpongs, leading to their suspension, causing the club to lose membership rights and be excluded from football competitions, including the Ashanti Regional Football Association Division Two League.
To address the situation, AshantiGold sought a temporary injunction to postpone the start of the upcoming league season until their case is resolved in court. This legal move further complicates the situation for clubs and stakeholders affected by the suspension and legal actions.
As the case unfolds, the football community anticipates the court’s decision on the injunction and the final resolution of AshantiGold’s situation, which has implications for the club, the GFA, and football activities involving the suspended club and banned officials.
