  • The young forward, who can both play up front and out wide, joins Latics for an undisclosed fee from Sky Bet League Two side Fleetwood Town
  • Asamoah: “With the Gaffer being a winger himself, it was a no-brainer to come because I feel like I’ll progress really well here.”

Wigan Athletic have confirmed the Deadline Day capture of talented and versatile English-born Ghanaian forward Maleace Asamoah from Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee, subject to EFL and FA approval.

Latics have snapped up the highly sought after Asamoah, who has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Brick Community Stadium.

The 21-year-old, who came through the Academy ranks at Reading, spent time in Greece with Super League sides Kalamata and Olympiacos Volos before linking up with his father and former Northampton Town striker Derek Asamoah at Isthmian League North Division side New Salamis FC.

His electric form for the non-league outfit caught the attention of multiple onlookers and Asamoah made a permanent switch to Fleetwood Town in the summer of 2023. He made his professional debut against Carlisle United on the opening day of the 2023/24 Sky Bet League One campaign, featuring a further eight times before joining the Cod Army’s sister club Waterford.

He marked his League of Ireland debut with a goal against Shelbourne, which proved to be a sign of things to come as the young forward enjoyed a very successful spell. He made 17 appearances for the Blues, netting six times and setting up a further four goals for his teammates before returning to the Fylde coast. He starred on both flanks, and led the line for the Irish outfit, becoming a real fan’s favourite in the process.

An impressive young player who will add plenty of pace and trickery to Latics’ frontline, Asamoah was convinced to be part of the Club’s exciting project by Manager Shaun Maloney and Sporting Director Gregor Rioch.

Commenting on his Deadline Day move to the Brick Community Stadium, Maleace Asamoah was quick to express his delight:

“I was excited when I got the call because I know Wigan is a prestigious club with a lot of history. I feel like it’s a great fit for me.

“With the Gaffer being a winger himself, it was a no-brainer to come because I feel like I’ll progress really well here.

“I am a really exciting player, and I like to get the crowd off their feet and entertain them. Every single week, I play for the badge. I’ll do everything for my teammates and the three points.”

Wigan first-Team Manager Shaun Maloney said:

We’re very pleased that Maleace has joined the Football Club. He is a player that I have watched for a long period of time.

“I feel like he has big potential and will become an important player for our club over the coming seasons.

“Maleace is very quick and talented in one-versus-one situations, he can play off either flank and as a striker. I look forward to welcoming him into our team.”

Sporting Director Gregor Rioch added:

“The arrival of Maleace is really exciting for the Football Club. He is a young player with lots of potential, and we believe he will become a key player for us. He can play a number of different positions across the frontline and is the type of forward who will get the supporters off their feet. I am looking forward to seeing how he develops in a Wigan Athletic shirt.”
