FLEETWOOD Town captain Brendan Sarpong Wiredu is expected to be the next new arrival at Plymouth Argyle after the Pilgrims agreed a fee with Fleetwood Town for his services.
The 25-year-old Londoner is expected to join the Pilgrims soon after the club agreed an undisclosed six-figure fee believed to be £300,000 with the League Two club for his services.
Capable of playing in defence or in midfield, Wiredu will offer plenty of defensive options for new head coach Tom Cleverley with Argyle beating several League One and Championship clubs to his signature.
Born in Tower Hamlets, London, Wiredu started his career in the Academy of Charlton Athletic and he had loan spells, but he only made six appearances for the Addicks – all in Cup competitions – before joining Colchester United for an undisclosed fee after a loan spell in Essex.
Before that, Wiredu had also spent time on loan at Bromley, but it was with the U’s that his career really got going. He made a total of 75 appearances for the club after initially joining on loan in September 2019, but he was on the move again in June 2022, signing for Fleetwood, who were then in League One.
Wiredu made 47 appearances in his first season and 39 in 2023/24 when the Cod Army suffered relegation from the third tier. At the start of last season, he was made club captain and made 37 appearances as the club finished 14th in the fourth tier.
Wiredu – along with team-mate James Bolton – was named by Fleetwood’s Community Trust as their player of the year for the 2024/25 season.
Argyle are looking to strengthen their defensive options with Maksym Talovierov expected to leave this summer. The 25-year-old club record signing is said to be in talks with Stoke City over a move with the Pilgrims set to recoup their £1.7 million outlay for him back in January.
