Dutch-born Ghanaian striker Brian Brobbey delivered a dramatic late winner as Sunderland came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 in a fiercely contested Tyne-Wear derby.

Newcastle had taken an early lead through Anthony Gordon, who capitalised on a defensive error to put the hosts ahead inside 10 minutes. The Magpies dominated large spells of the first half but failed to extend their advantage.

Sunderland responded after the break, drawing level through Chemsdine Talbi following a corner, setting up a tense finale at St James’ Park.

With the match heading for a draw, Brobbey stepped up in stoppage time. After his initial effort was saved, the striker reacted quickest to slot home the rebound in the 90th minute, completing a memorable turnaround for the visitors.

The victory ends Sunderland’s brief winless run and sees them leapfrog Newcastle in the league standings, while extending their rivals’ poor record in recent derby meetings.
