Al Ahly has clinched a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League following Young Africans’ commanding 4-0 victory over CR Belouizdad on Saturday.
The African champions emerged victorious against Ghana’s Medeama on Friday but required any result other than a draw between Young Africans and CR Belouizdad to solidify their qualification.
The match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam unfolded as Young Africans delivered a stunning defeat to their Algerian opponents, securing Al Ahly’s progression to the next stage. Mudathiri Yahya’s goal just before halftime gave the hosts a narrow lead, but an impressive second-half performance saw Stephane Aziz Ki, Kennedy Musonda, and Joseph Gnadou extend the lead, sealing a resounding 4-0 victory.
With CR Belouizdad trailing in third place with five points, four behind leaders Al Ahly, and only one game remaining, Al Ahly’s place in the quarter-finals is now confirmed.
Joining Al Ahly in the knockout stage is Young Africans, whose head-to-head record with Belouizdad secures their qualification, regardless of their own result against Al Ahly in Cairo.
This achievement marks Al Ahly’s eighth consecutive appearance in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, with a draw in their final fixture against Young Africans potentially securing them the top spot in the group.
