On Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2022-23 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League with a 2-1 victory over CR Belouizdad at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
Despite falling behind to a goal from Sofiane Bouchar after 24 minutes, Sundowns fought back with goals from Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena to seal the win. The South African side had already won the first leg 4-1 away from home, giving them a 6-2 aggregate victory.
Sundowns, who won the African title in 2016, will now face defending champions Wydad Athletic Club in the semi-finals. Wydad Athletic Club advanced to the last four on Friday after beating Tanzania’s Simba 4-3 on post-match penalties.
Belouizdad needed to win by a margin of more than four goals to progress, while Sundowns only needed to avoid defeat or lose 2-0 in the return fixture.
Despite a strong start from the Algerians, Sundowns proved to be too strong for them and held on for the win.
