Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has challenged Ghana to take an honest look at the reasons behind the country’s long wait for another Africa Cup of Nations title.
Ghana are four-time winners of the continental competition, but their most recent triumph came in 1982. Since then, the Black Stars have come close on several occasions but have been unable to add another AFCON trophy to the country’s history.
Queiroz believes understanding why Ghana have gone so long without winning the competition is an important step towards achieving the country’s ambition of lifting the trophy again.
“Why have Ghana not won an AFCON in 44 years?” Queiroz asked.
The Portuguese coach says the question should not simply be viewed as a reflection of past disappointments but as an opportunity for Ghanaian football to examine what needs to change to achieve future success.
According to Queiroz, the answer must be sought honestly if Ghana is serious about turning its ambition of winning the AFCON into reality.
The coach’s comments come as the Black Stars begin preparations for their upcoming AFCON qualifying campaign, with the team aiming to secure a place at the next continental tournament.
Queiroz has also stressed the importance of investment beyond the senior national team, arguing that sustained progress requires attention to youth development, facilities, infrastructure, logistics and medical support.
His latest remarks therefore form part of a broader discussion about the structures and long-term planning required to help Ghana return to the highest level of African football.
The Black Stars have a proud AFCON history, having won the tournament four times, but their inability to claim the title since 1982 remains a significant part of Ghana’s football story.
For Queiroz, confronting that history honestly and identifying the factors behind the prolonged drought will be necessary if the country is to turn its ambitions into tangible success.
