“Current Black Stars players can’t be compared to past players who were playing for top clubs in Europe” – Otto Addo

Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, recently shared his thoughts on the challenges facing the current Black Stars squad as they attempt to fill the void left by legendary players such as Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, and Stephen Appiah.

In a candid interview, Addo emphasized the difficulties of drawing comparisons between the current crop of players and those who have graced the pitches of some of the world’s top clubs.

“I can’t compare players who have played for Chelsea, Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and AC Milan to our current squad,” Addo stated. “Those players have set a very high standard. With all due respect to our current players, they may reach that level one day, but they are not there yet. This is not an excuse for our performances; we must strive to beat every opponent.”

Reflecting on the recent disappointing results, where the Black Stars have struggled to secure wins in critical qualifiers, Addo highlighted the team’s need for resilience. “Out of two games, we should aim to win at least one and perhaps draw the other. We need to beat teams like Sudan, but it can be difficult for the players, especially when there’s a lot of negativity surrounding them before the matches,” he noted.

Addo acknowledged that while criticism is part of the sport, it can weigh heavily on the players. “It’s normal for emotions to run high after a game, but the negativity before a match is not something I consider normal. I understand the sentiments of the fans; after all, we represent the society and carry the weight of Ghanaian expectations. We have a significant responsibility to do much, much better.”

Despite the challenges, Addo remains hopeful that the team can rise to the occasion and create their own legacy. He believes that with dedication and hard work, the current players can achieve success and eventually write their names in the annals of Ghanaian football history, following in the footsteps of the legends who came before them.
