Leyton Orient ended their winless streak against Wigan Athletic with an impressive 2-0 victory in Round 19 of League One at The Brick Community Stadium.
This historic win marked the club’s first-ever triumph in this fixture, fueled by a standout performance from English-born Ghanaian forward Daniel Agyei.
The match began as a balanced contest, with Wigan edging possession at 53% but failing to create clear scoring opportunities. Leyton Orient seized their chances effectively, breaking the deadlock in the 41st minute. Agyei delivered a perfectly placed cross into the box, which Jayden Sweeney calmly converted with a left-footed finish to give Orient the lead.
Wigan struggled to respond, with their low expected goals (xG) of 0.26 highlighting their lack of attacking threat. Leyton Orient sealed the victory in stoppage time when substitute Diallang Jaiyesimi latched onto a pass from Josh Keeley and fired a clinical strike past the Wigan goalkeeper.
Agyei’s performance was instrumental, earning him his fourth assist of the season and bringing his total goal contributions to seven in 18 appearances. The win lifted Leyton Orient into a more secure mid-table position as they turn their focus to their upcoming EFL Trophy clash against Charlton Athletic on December 10.
