Ghanaian forward Davis Opoku experienced contrasting fortunes after scoring at both ends as Oud-Heverlee Leuven secured a 1-1 draw against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Opoku gave Oud-Heverlee Leuven the lead in the 17th minute before inadvertently scoring an own goal in the second half, allowing the hosts to salvage a point at Stade Joseph Marien.
The 1-1 result ended Union Saint-Gilloise’s run of five consecutive league victories and denied the reigning Belgian football contenders another opportunity to strengthen their position near the top of the standings.
Oud-Heverlee Leuven started the encounter with determination and were rewarded for their attacking approach when Opoku broke the deadlock midway through the opening half.
The Ghanaian forward finished from close range after receiving a cross from teammate Wouter George, putting the visitors ahead in the 17th minute.
His goal gave Leuven an early advantage against a Union Saint-Gilloise side that had entered the fixture in impressive league form. The visitors continued to look for opportunities to extend their lead, while the hosts struggled to convert their possession into clear scoring chances before the interval.
Leuven went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage, with Opoku’s early strike providing the difference between the two sides.
However, the Ghanaian’s afternoon took an unfortunate turn after the restart.
Union Saint-Gilloise increased the pressure as they searched for an equaliser, creating several opportunities in the second half. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 66th minute through an unfortunate incident involving Opoku.
A cross from Guilherme Smith was deflected by Leuven goalkeeper Kiany Vroman, and Opoku inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with the situation.
The own goal brought Union Saint-Gilloise level at 1-1, wiping out Leuven’s advantage and leaving the Ghanaian forward on both sides of the scoresheet.
Despite the setback, Leuven remained organised as the hosts pushed for a winning goal. Union Saint-Gilloise continued to apply pressure but were unable to find a decisive breakthrough before the final whistle.
The home side’s difficulties were compounded in stoppage time when defender Louis Patris received a straight red card in the 90th minute for a dangerous challenge, leaving Union with ten players for the closing moments.
Neither team managed to score again, and the contest ended in a draw that gave Leuven a valuable point away from home.
For Opoku, the match was a mixture of personal achievement and disappointment. His opening goal demonstrated his attacking instincts and ability to capitalise on opportunities, but his second-half own goal ultimately prevented Leuven from taking all three points.
Nevertheless, the Ghanaian’s contribution underlined his involvement in Leuven’s attacking play, and he will hope to build on his goalscoring performance in the club’s upcoming fixtures.
The result also represented an important outcome for Oud-Heverlee Leuven, who earned a point against one of the league’s in-form sides. Union Saint-Gilloise, meanwhile, missed the opportunity to continue their winning run and strengthen their position in the title race.
Leuven will now look to carry the positive aspects of their performance into their next league assignment as they seek greater consistency during the 2026-27 campaign.
