Union Berlin left-back Derrick Köhn has revealed that he has fully committed himself to representing Ghana at international level whenever he is called upon.

The 26-year-old received his first senior call-up to the Black Stars in August for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali. However, his international debut was delayed as he waited for FIFA clearance to complete his switch of nationality.

Köhn was later named in Ghana’s squad for the Kirin Challenge Cup, where he eventually made his debut against Japan. Although the Black Stars lost that match, the defender impressed with a solid performance.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Köhn explained that earlier efforts by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to recruit him did not succeed. At the time, he chose to focus on his club career.

“I wasn’t very connected to Ghana when I was younger, so playing for Germany at the U-19 level felt natural,” Köhn said. “Ghana first contacted me in 2020 when I was playing in the Netherlands, but the talks didn’t progress, so I concentrated on my club football.”

He added that discussions resumed in 2024 through Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, whom he already knew from their time together at Hamburg’s youth setup.

“When Otto Addo contacted me, I told him clearly that I was ready to play for Ghana if he needed me,” Köhn explained.

Köhn has enjoyed a strong start to the 2025/26 season with Union Berlin, making 15 appearances and establishing himself as an important member of the team.
