Dutch-born defender Derrick Luckassen has built a reputation as a versatile and physically imposing footballer, enjoying a career that has taken him across some of Europe’s top leagues. With Ghanaian roots and experience in the Netherlands, England, Turkey, Belgium, Israel and Greece, Luckassen remains one of the most travelled defenders of his generation.

Age and Early Life

Derrick Luckassen was born on July 3, 1995, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Raised in a football-loving family, he developed his skills in the youth system of AZ Alkmaar, one of the Netherlands’ most respected talent-development clubs.

His athleticism, strength and ability to play in multiple defensive positions helped him rise through the ranks and eventually break into professional football.

Height and Playing Style

Luckassen stands at approximately 1.86 metres (6 feet 1 inch), giving him a strong physical presence in defence.

Primarily a centre-back, he is also capable of operating as a right-back or defensive midfielder. His pace, aerial ability and aggressive style of defending have made him a valuable asset for clubs seeking defensive versatility.

Nationality and Ghanaian Heritage

Although born and raised in the Netherlands, Luckassen is of Ghanaian descent through his parents.

His Ghanaian roots have often attracted interest from football followers in Ghana, particularly because of his eligibility to represent the Black Stars. However, he chose to represent the Netherlands at youth level, featuring for the country’s various junior national teams.

Despite never making a senior international appearance for the Dutch national team, his connection to Ghana remains a significant part of his identity.

Professional Career and Transfers

Breakthrough at AZ Alkmaar

Luckassen began his professional career with AZ Alkmaar, making his senior debut in 2014. He quickly established himself as one of the club’s promising young defenders and became a regular feature in the Eredivisie.

Move to PSV Eindhoven

In 2017, he secured a high-profile transfer to PSV Eindhoven, one of the biggest clubs in Dutch football.

The move represented a major step forward in his career, although competition for places limited his opportunities.

Loan Spell in England

Seeking regular playing time, Luckassen joined Anderlecht on loan before later moving to Huddersfield Town in England’s Championship.

His time in England exposed him to the physical demands of English football and further broadened his experience.

Success at Anderlecht

One of the most productive periods of his career came during his spell at Anderlecht, where he became a key member of the Belgian club’s defence. His performances earned praise for his consistency and leadership qualities.

Adventures in Turkey, Israel and Greece

Luckassen’s career later took him to several countries, including Turkey and Israel, before joining Maccabi Tel Aviv.

His strong displays helped the club compete domestically and in European competitions.

He subsequently moved to Panathinaikos, adding another chapter to a career that has spanned multiple leagues and football cultures.
