Ghana U20 coach, Desmond Ofei, is optimistic that the newly restructured Black Stars technical team will bring rapid improvements to the senior national team.
Ofei, who was appointed two weeks ago as one of the assistant coaches, joins a team led by an experienced German coach, Wilfred Schäfer. Schäfer, who guided Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, has taken on the role of technical director for the Black Stars.
These changes come after Ghana’s disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, prompting the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to revamp the coaching setup.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Ofei expressed confidence in the new team’s ability to turn things around:
“We have a lot of work to do, but I think we’re in a good position to qualify the team to the World Cup, and everybody’s hungry.”
He further emphasized the motivation within the coaching staff, highlighting the addition of new personnel:
“Everybody’s really hungry, and we have a new head of video analysis, we have a psychologist or sports mental coach, as you want to call it, so I feel like everybody’s hungry to make sure that we qualify for the World Cup.”
The Black Stars will return to competitive action in March when they face Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
