Black Stars assistant coach, Desmond Ofei, has expressed strong confidence in the newly structured technical team, describing it as well-organized and highly capable.
In response to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made significant changes to the team’s coaching setup.
Despite mounting pressure for his removal, Otto Addo has been retained as the head coach. Meanwhile, John Paintsil has been appointed as the first assistant coach, with Desmond Ofei taking the role of the second assistant coach.
The goalkeeping department remains under the supervision of Fatau Dauda, while German tactician Winfried Schäfer, a 2002 AFCON-winning coach with Cameroon, has been brought in as the team’s technical advisor and football director for both the Black Stars and the GFA.
The new setup also includes Kris Perquy as the team’s psychologist and Gregory De Grauwe as the video analyst.
Sharing his thoughts on the revamped coaching staff, Ofei told Citi Sports:
“I feel like the setup looks really, really strong with a very experienced technical advisor in the name of Schäfer. So, you know, Winfried Schäfer. I feel like the chemistry is going to be there.”
The Black Stars will regroup in March for their Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they are set to face Chad and Madagascar.
