English EFL league One club Fleetwood Town FC, have announced the signing of English-born midfielder Brendan Sarpong Wiredu on a three-year deal for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

The highly-rated 22-year-old joins the Cods from Sky Bet League Two side Colchester United, with Town having to fight off multiple League One and Championship sides for his signature.

London-born Wiredu started his career at Charlton Athletic with a loan move to Bromley following that up before heading to The U’s, initially on loan in 2019.

The midfielder picked up valuable experience since then, having featured in 75 games for the side from Essex.

Head Coach Scott Brown had this to say on the signing: “Brendan caught our eye early on in the window and we managed to fight off a lot of competition to get him through the door. He was our number one target for an area we felt we needed to strengthen so we are happy to get it over the line.

“It’s a good opportunity for a bright young lad to come in and progress his career at Fleetwood, we can’t wait to see him join up with the squad when everyone is back for pre-season training this week.”
