New signing Brendan Wiredu sat down at Poolfoot Farm and has his first interview with the club shortly after signing a three-year deal.
The highly-rated 22-year-old joins the Cods from Sky Bet League Two side Colchester United, with Town having to fight off multiple League One and Championship sides for his signature. The midfielder picked up valuable experience with The U’s, having featured in 75 games there, and will be looking to progress even further with the Cods.
Here’s what Brendan had to say in his first interview:
On making the move to Fleetwood.
“I’m excited and ready to get started here at Fleetwood; I want to get out there and show what I can bring to the table. The main draw was the fact the club wanted to get the deal done quickly as it showed me that they wanted me from the beginning.
“They showed everything that I wanted to see and the project that they showed to me is something that I want to get behind. I spoke to the gaffer [Scott Brown] and he told me about his plans and from what was said, it just made sense for me to come here as it lined up with what I want to grow into as a football player.
“The gaffer played in the exact same position as I do so I would be a fool not to go and pick his brains and get some tips from him – that was probably one of the biggest draws in me picking to come to Fleetwood. He spoke to me well, told me what he expected from me, and it all just lined up to what I want to do in my career now as I push forwards.”
On meeting the lads later this week….
“The training complex is incredible; I didn’t realise how nice and modern it was before coming here. It gives you everything that you need to be the best that you can be. I just need to make the most of the facilities and prove that I can be the best I can be on the pitch when games come back around.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone, I think it’s a good challenge in itself to get to know a whole new group and hopefully start something special. At least I’m not the only one who is new to the squad so I might be going in with them when I first get into the dressing room.”
On what the fans can expect…
“The fans should expect for me to wear my heart on my sleeve and will be ready to put my body on the line. I’ll work hard and do everything for the badge, I think what I’ve just said is the minimum requirement as you always have to work hard for the club you are at – I believe I will bring these things to the table.
“I can only thank Colchester for the opportunities that they gave me, they’ve given me platform so I can earn a move to Fleetwood, a team who managed to stay in League One last year and have ambitions to push higher this year and that’s something I want to be a part of.
“I want to come here and prove that I could be one of the best players for the club, I want to help push the team higher. We’ve all got ambitions and my ones line up with the gaffer in that we both want to help the club progress to where it needs to be. I’m chomping at the bit to get started, I just want to get out there and show everyone what I’m capable of.”
