Former Asante Kotoko captain, Eric Donkor, has drawn parallels between rising star Richmond Lamptey and club legend Stephen Oduro, challenging the notion of a decline in the Ghana Premier League’s quality.
Donkor’s assertion comes amidst perceptions of a diminished standard in the league compared to previous years. However, citing players like Lamptey, the ex-defender emphasized the presence of quality within the Ghanaian top-flight.
“We have quality players in the GPL who can match with players like Stephen Oduro, Ishmael Addo, Opoku Nti, and others. Richmond Lamptey is comparable to Stephen Oduro”
“People had loved for players like Malik Jaber, Stephen Oduro, and Charles Taylor and the rest because they played in our league for a longer period of time, and it is why their names are mentioned always. However, no one can persuade me that the league is of low quality”
While acknowledging Oduro’s illustrious career, spanning sixteen years with Kotoko, Donkor highlighted the tendency for current players to seek opportunities abroad, impacting their local league visibility.
“The current GPL players are of high quality, but fans can’t get enough of them because they’re always leaving the country. Stephen Oduro may be slightly ahead of Lamptey because Oduro has played in the local league for a long time, but Lamptey’s future at Kotoko is uncertain at the moment”
Oduro, affectionately known as “Tico Tico,” enjoyed a storied career with Kotoko, clinching numerous domestic league titles and making notable contributions on the continental stage.
