In a video shared on his Instagram page, a 39-year-old striker confirmed that he is retiring from his 22-year career as a professional athlete.

He expressed gratitude to his fans for supporting him throughout his journey, which had its share of highs and lows.

The striker, Emmanuel Adebayor, started his career with Togolese club AC Merlan Lome before moving to Europe, where he joined French team FC Metz as a teenager.

He went on to play for various notable teams such as Monaco, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

He also played for Turkish teams Istanbul Basaksehir and Kayserispor, and Paraguayan team Olimpia Asuncion before ending his career with AC Semmasi in his home country of Togo.

Adebayor was recently in attendance at Christian Atsu’s funeral and burial ceremony.
