Asante Kotoko are considering former Hearts of Oak assistant coach Hamza Obeng as the potential replacement for the recently departed David Ocloo, Sportsworldghana.com can exclusively report.
Ocloo, who had been with Kotoko’s technical team since September 2021, stepped down prior to the team’s 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday. Initially joining the club as an assistant under head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, Ocloo had worked alongside John Eduafo.
With Ocloo’s departure, Kotoko are actively searching for a replacement, and Hamza Obeng’s name has emerged as a strong candidate.
Obeng, 31, was a key figure in Medeama’s technical staff, serving as the deputy to Samuel Boadu from October 2017 to February 2021. Following his time at Medeama, Hamza made the move to Hearts of Oak, where he continued as Boadu’s assistant from March 2021 to September 2022.
During his time at Hearts, Obeng who holds CAF license B certificate played a significant role in helping the Phobians secure their first Ghana Premier League title in a decade in the 2020-21 season, along with winning the FA Cup in the same campaign. He also contributed to their successful defense of the FA Cup in the following season.
Currently, Obeng serves as the assistant coach at Vision FC after guding them to secure promotion into the Ghanaian top-flight, but Kotoko’s interest in him highlights his reputation and credentials as a highly-rated tactician.
