Accra Hearts of Oak have opened discussions with experienced Ghanaian midfielder Maxwell Baakoh as the club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the second half of the 2026/27 season.
Baakoh is currently a free agent after leaving Algerian top-flight side MC Oran, where he spent two years following his move from fellow Ligue 1 outfit USM Khenchela in January 2024.
Should negotiations prove successful, the 31-year-old would make a return to the Ghana Premier League for the first time since his departure to North Africa.
Baakoh is no stranger to Ghanaian football. He began his senior career with WA All Stars before enjoying a spell at Karela United, where his impressive performances earned him a move to Asante Kotoko in 2018.
After leaving Kotoko, the diminutive playmaker embarked on a journey abroad, joining Egyptian side Ceramica Cleopatra in 2020. He later featured for Libya’s Al-Madina and Jordanian club Sahab SC before reviving his career in Algeria with USM Khenchela, where he established himself as one of the league’s standout attacking midfielders. His form earned him a €300,000 move to MC Oran in January 2024, a transfer that was widely reported as one of the biggest domestic deals in the Algerian league at the time.
Following the expiration of his spell with MC Oran, Baakoh is now available as a free agent, paving the way for Hearts of Oak to explore a deal.
Known for his creativity, dribbling ability and versatility across the attacking midfield and wing positions, Baakoh would bring valuable experience to the Phobians should the move be completed.
Talks between the two parties are ongoing, with Hearts hopeful of reaching an agreement to secure the signature of the former Asante Kotoko midfielder in the coming days.
