FIFA slaps Hearts of Oak with three-window transfer ban over Rene Hiddink debt

Accra Hearts of Oak have been hit with a major setback after FIFA imposed a three-transfer window registration ban on the club for failing to settle an outstanding debt owed to former Technical Director Rene Hiddink.

In a letter dated 21 August 2025, FIFA’s Legal and Compliance Division confirmed that the Phobians had defaulted on a ruling (reference FPSD-17518) which ordered them to pay USD 150,000 to Hiddink within 90 days.

Their failure to comply has now triggered disciplinary sanctions, barring the club from registering new players both domestically and internationally. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been instructed to enforce the ban locally.

The ruling comes at a critical time for Hearts of Oak, who are in the midst of a rebuilding phase aimed at restoring their dominance in Ghanaian football. With the ban in place, the Phobians will be unable to recruit reinforcements, a situation that could significantly undermine their competitiveness in the upcoming campaign.

FIFA’s action underscores its strict stance on financial discipline, serving as a warning to clubs worldwide that contractual obligations must be honoured.

The only way out for Hearts is to pay the full USD 150,000 owed to Hiddink. Pressure now mounts on the club’s hierarchy to mobilise funds urgently, as prolonged restrictions could further derail both their on-field ambitions and off-field stability.
