Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Ghana national team, has recently revealed his preliminary squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

This provisional squad consists of 55 players, and notably, Hughton has included five local talents, showcasing his recognition of the talent within the Ghana Premier League.

Among these local stars is Ibrahim Salifu, a midfielder from Hearts of Oak, and Richmond Lamptey, a midfield powerhouse representing Asante Kotoko.

The squad also features three players from Medeama Sporting Club: striker Jonathan Sowah, defender Fataw Abdul Hamidu, and goalkeeper Felix Kyei. Their inclusion in the provisional squad is a testament to their skills and contributions in the domestic league.

With the final squad deadline set for January 3, coach Hughton has some time to make decisions and finalize his chosen 27 players for the 2023 AFCON. This gives him an opportunity to assess the players thoroughly and ensure the best combination for a successful campaign.

The AFCON tournament is scheduled to commence on Saturday, January 13, and Ghana finds itself placed in Group B. The Black Stars will face strong competition from Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. This grouping presents both challenges and opportunities for Ghana as they aim to navigate through the group stage and make an impact on the continental stage.

As the anticipation builds for the AFCON kick-off, fans eagerly await the final squad announcement and hope that the blend of experience and local talent will guide the Black Stars to a successful campaign.

Coach Hughton’s choices will play a crucial role in shaping Ghana’s journey in this prestigious tournament, and the nation stands united in support of its football team.
