Fleetwood Town Chairman Andy Pilley, has described the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Brendan Wiredu as a statement of intent for Fleetwood Town ahead of the new season – and has promised there’s more to come!
The Cods have enjoyed a busy summer in the transfer market so far as new Head Coach Scott Brown looks to boost his squad ahead of the big kick-off next month.
And following the six-figure deal to secure Colchester’s highly-rated midfielder Wiredu, the Chairman said it shows Town mean business this season.
“It’s a huge statement of intent I think. Last season was a year we don’t want to ever have to go through again. Avoiding relegation by the skin of our teeth isn’t an experience I’ve had before, and I certainly don’t intend to again.
“That’s why we are determined to put it right this summer. The business we’ve done so far has been excellent, and the capture of Brendan shows what we are about again going forward.
“Brendan was one of the best midfielders in League Two last season and was being watched by a number of clubs in League One and the Championship, we’ve paid a big sum to get him here and feel we can help him develop into a top midfielder who we sell in the future.
“Our scouts flagged Brendan up as a stand-out up-and-coming player in League Two, and the data backs that up. He’s right at the top of the statistics for ball-winning and other areas needed for a player in his position. We are really delighted to have secured him.”
The EFL League One side have so far added Josh Vela, Shaun Rooney, goalkeeper Jay Lynch and now Wiredu to their squad this summer, and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to end there.
Pilley added: “We are determined to give Scott and the staff the best possible squad for the coming season. I’m confident we will have at least another couple of exciting signings to follow!”.
