Former England football legend Gary Lineker has heaped praise on Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, calling him a “special kid” after his game-changing performance in Leicester City’s dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Southampton.
The Ghanaian winger came off the bench with Leicester trailing 2-0 and immediately made his presence felt, providing the assist that sparked the Foxes’ remarkable fightback. His influence on the game was clear, with Issahaku registering seven touches in the opposition’s box — more than any other player on the field.
He nearly scored with a powerful shot that hit the crossbar and later earned a penalty after his header was handled, allowing Jamie Vardy to equalize. Jordan Ayew then completed the comeback with a last-minute winner.
Lineker, a Leicester legend himself, couldn’t contain his admiration for the 21-year-old’s performance. Speaking about Issahaku’s impact, Lineker said, “What a comeback. What a win. The game really changed when Abdul Fatawu came on. As a Leicester fan, my kids follow Leicester as well. Every time we see the teamsheet and he’s not in it, we go, ‘oh no, not again. Why is he not playing? This kid is special.'”
Despite his strong performance, questions have been raised about why Issahaku hasn’t been a regular starter, especially considering the energy and creativity he brings to the team. His crucial assist and attacking threat were key in helping Leicester secure the win, further enhancing his growing reputation in English football.
Fatawu will be looking to maintain his impressive form as Leicester City prepares to host Nottingham Forest at the King Power Stadium on Friday night.
