Former Vice-President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has taken the step of instructing his legal team to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) after his disqualification by the Elections Committee from participating in the upcoming GFA Elections.
The Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association, in a ruling on September 18, 2023, upheld the decision of the Elections Committee, which contended that George Afriyie’s nomination was endorsed by an individual who did not meet the criteria for endorsing candidates in the GFA elections.
A report by Muftawu Nabila from JoySports suggests that there might be an injunction from the Accra High Court against the election process. This possibility arises after George Afriyie had previously filed an appeal against the decision of the Ghana Football Association Elections Committee to disqualify him.
However, nearly ten days after filing his initial appeal, the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association announced on Tuesday, September 18, that it had dismissed his appeal. The committee’s decision was based on the fact that George Afriyie had utilized an unqualified individual, Jeffrey Asare, to endorse his nomination forms. Further investigation revealed that Asare was not a Director at Victory Club Warriors FC, as he had claimed on the forms. Moreover, George Afriyie had garnered six endorsements for his form, whereas only five were allowed.
George Afriyie’s disqualification means that the incumbent GFA president, Kurt Okraku, will run unopposed in the upcoming presidential elections, which are scheduled for Wednesday, September 27, at the Rahdach Hotel in Tamale.
