GFA exploring Jamaica friendly as Black Stars intensify 2026 World Cup preparations

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has entered discussions with Jamaica over a possible international friendly as the Black Stars continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With the tournament set to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, Ghana’s technical team is seeking additional opportunities to sharpen the squad ahead of the global competition.

The Black Stars have already faced strong European opposition in recent months, taking on Austria and Germany during Otto Addo’s tenure as head coach. However, following consecutive defeats, Addo was dismissed from his role.

Ghana were back in action over the weekend against Mexico at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, where they suffered a 2-0 loss under the guidance of assistant coach Desmond Ofei.

The team had initially planned to conclude their preparatory matches with a fixture against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium. However, reports suggest newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz has requested another friendly encounter to further evaluate his squad before the World Cup begins.

As a result, talks have intensified over a potential meeting with Jamaica’s national team, the Reggae Boyz, with negotiations believed to be at an advanced stage.

Ghana head into the tournament hoping to improve on their recent World Cup performances after suffering group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022. The four-time African champions are aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since their historic quarterfinal run in 2010.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ghana have been placed in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing England at the Boston Stadium on June 23. Their final group-stage fixture will see them take on Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.
