The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has begun the process of finding a new head coach for the Black Stars following the breakdown of contract extension talks with Carlos Queiroz.
The experienced Portuguese coach, who was appointed in April 2026 on a short-term contract, guided Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup after replacing Otto Addo.
However, Queiroz is reportedly unwilling to continue with the Black Stars unless his demands for an improved package are met.
According to Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, Queiroz was earning around $80,000 per month during his initial spell with Ghana. Negotiations over an extension are understood to have stalled after the 73-year-old reportedly requested a salary of approximately $150,000 per month.
The former Iran and Egypt coach is also said to have requested additional foreign members for his technical team as part of his plans for continuity.
With the demands proving difficult to accommodate, the GFA has turned its attention towards alternative candidates.
Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has reportedly emerged as one of the leading contenders for the position. His familiarity with the squad and involvement in the current technical setup could work in his favour should the GFA opt for continuity.
If appointed, the next head coach would become the seventh coach under GFA President Kurt Okraku’s administration, highlighting the continued search for stability within the Black Stars technical setup.
The GFA faces a race against time to resolve the situation, with Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers approaching.
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign in September, having missed the previous AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Ghana has been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia, making the appointment of a new coach an increasingly urgent matter as the national team prepares for another crucial qualifying campaign.
