Ghana’s football community is in mourning following the passing of legendary striker Wilberforce Mfum, who died on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 88. The heartbreaking news coincided with Mother’s Day celebrations, casting a somber tone over the nation.

Mfum, a former Black Stars and Asante Kotoko forward, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Ghana’s football history. His death was announced via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), though the cause has not yet been publicly disclosed.

A National Hero and AFCON Pioneer

Wilberforce Mfum was a central figure in Ghana’s golden era of football and played a crucial role in the Black Stars’ maiden Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph in 1963. He etched his name into continental history by scoring Ghana’s first-ever AFCON goal—a thunderous eighth-minute strike against Tunisia that reportedly tore through the net, earning him the nickname “The Bulldozer.”

Mfum’s blend of power, precision, and positional awareness made him a feared attacker. Over his international career, he scored an impressive 20 goals in 26 appearances for the Black Stars, a remarkable ratio that underscores his status as one of Africa’s most lethal forwards of his time.

Club Icon at Asante Kotoko

At the domestic level, Mfum enjoyed a glittering spell with Kumasi-based giants Asante Kotoko. He played over 200 matches and scored 100 goals for the club, helping to establish Kotoko’s dominance in Ghanaian football during the 1960s. His performances won him national admiration and international attention.

A Trailblazer Abroad

In 1968, Mfum made a pioneering move to the United States, becoming one of the first Ghanaian players to feature in North American professional football. He played for clubs including the New York Cosmos, Baltimore Bays, and Ukrainian SC, contributing to the early development of soccer in the U.S. and paving the way for future African exports.

Legacy of a Legend

Beyond his playing days, Mfum’s story continues to inspire young Ghanaian footballers. His legacy is one of talent, determination, and trailblazing courage—a symbol of what is possible for Ghanaian athletes on both local and global stages.

As the nation reflects on his life and achievements, Wilberforce Mfum is remembered not only as a goal-scorer but as a national treasure whose impact on Ghanaian football will never fade.
