Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan shared that his favorite coach during his time with the Black Stars was Claud Le Roy. Gyan, who worked with many coaches while on the national team, specifically praised the French coach who led the team from 2006 to 2008. Le Roy’s time as coach coincided with a crucial period in Gyan’s career when he performed at his best.
Gyan believes Le Roy played a significant role in his career, helping him become Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, including six in the World Cup, making him the African with the most goals in the tournament’s history. According to Gyan, he felt most comfortable with Le Roy compared to other coaches. Le Roy created an open atmosphere where players felt confident.
Gyan highlighted Le Roy’s skill in building players’ confidence and allowing them to play their natural game while also guiding them with tactics that respected individual player preferences. Although Gyan started positively with Le Roy in 2007, he faced challenges during the crucial CAN 2008 tournament. Despite injuries, Gyan took risks to play, even ending up in the hospital.
Reflecting on the difficulties he encountered during the tournament, Gyan appreciated Le Roy’s support and guidance during that period. The coach’s understanding and encouragement helped Gyan navigate through tough times and continue performing at his best for the team. Gyan’s admiration for Le Roy’s coaching style demonstrates the impact a coach can have on a player’s career and development.
