Former Ghanaian international, Mohammed Polo, has expressed skepticism about the Black Stars’ chances of securing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Although the Black Stars have won the tournament four times, their last championship victory was in 1982. Since then, they have reached the final three times but ended as runners-up.
In an interview with Bryt FM, Polo, a winner of the 1978 AFCON, believes that Ghana is no longer considered a favorite in recent competitions due to their performance. He noted that the team is not seeded in tournament draws, reflecting the state of Ghanaian football, and that a positive outcome would be akin to a miracle.
“For sometime now, we are not favourite in any competition because of our performance in recent times. We are not seeded in any draw which tells you where our football is going, if something good comes along the line then it’s a miracle”
“We pray things will go on well for the Black Stars at the AFCON but I don’t think there is something special we have to talk about. We hope to see something better, if we are able to win the trophy then that will also be a different thing” he said.
Ghana has been placed in Group B and will face challenging opponents, including record holders Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. Their AFCON campaign kicks off with a match against Cape Verde on January 14, 2024, followed by fixtures against Egypt on January 18 and Mozambique on January 22.
