Heart of Lions have achieved an astonishing survival in the Ghana Premier League, securing their spot in the top flight with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Berekum Chelsea on the final day of the season.
The Phobians, who had failed to win a game in over ten matches, miraculously worked their way out of relegation danger to finish 13th on the table with 45 points. Berekum Chelsea, meanwhile, had nothing to play for as their status for next season was already secured.
The match got off to a promising start for Heart of Lions, with Stephen Amankona scoring the opening goal in the 12th minute. He added another goal just before halftime to give Berekum Chelsea a 2-0 lead.
However, Heart of Lions refused to give up and staged a dramatic comeback. Ebenezer Abban scored two penalties, including a contentious second penalty in stoppage time, to earn the draw and secure their Premier League status.
The second penalty sparked controversy as it appeared there was no contact on the player. Despite the uncertainty, the referee awarded the penalty, and Abban converted it to level the score and send the Heart of Lions’ fans into delirium.
